Sun-Grown Cannabis Rated by Experts

A Judge’s Perspective | Matt Kovarsky

For the last 4 years I’ve worked at The Novel Tree & The Novel Tree Medical where I’ve been able to see the rise of legal recreational cannabis firsthand, and it’s given me so many opportunities to see the inner workings of the industry from a truly unique perspective.

One of the most exciting things has been getting to know the different growers, their growing methods, and their products. While I’ve learned how to grow hydroponically indoors and was able to produce some very high-quality cannabis (if I do say so myself), I’ve also learned to appreciate and have a love for sun grown cannabis. While you can create ideal conditions indoors, the cannabis plant produces cannabinoids and terpenes as a stress response, it is literally the plants immune system. There are many people that believe that without any kind of struggle or stress, indoor plants are sometimes missing the unique characteristics that you can find with a plant exposed to the elements, getting the full spectrum light of the sun.

Several months ago, I received an email from the Washington Sungrowers Industry Association notifying members of the forthcoming 2020 Sun Cup, a cannabis competition for all things sun grown. The email was informing growers how to submit their cannabis to be judged, but one of the last lines of the email was asking for people to submit for the opportunity to be a judge. After immediately clicking the link and seeing that I met all the criteria to be a judge, I submitted an application and began checking my emails for a response.

A few weeks later I received the most glorious of emails saying that I’d been selected as a judge for the 2020 Sun Cup. I was over the moon excited. There were instructions on where and how to pick-up products, as COVID was new at this time there was a series of social distancing and spy-like signaling to pick up the products to sample. I was not informed which category I would be judging for, so I went and picked up my bag, which was a lot smaller than I was expecting. It didn’t seem to be over flowing with ounces of beautiful sun grown flower like I had thought!

When I arrived back at home, I emptied the bag and to my amazement saw a bountiful assortment of THC & CBD vaporizer cartridges. I won’t say exactly how many, but it was enough to be excited about! There was also a letter informing me of how and where to document my experiences and submit my judging reviews. Once I had the plan for how I would do my sampling in place, I had to do the first most important thing you have to do with any cartridge, which is make sure it works on your vape battery. A faulty cartridge would definitely lose some points of course! I put each cartridge on my vape battery and took one or two puffs from each vaporizer, which all worked perfectly from the first draw, and the combination of all the THC and CBD vapes had me feeling pretty good. So far, I was really enjoying being a judge.

None of the vape cartridges were labeled, to keep each one anonymous and keep the judging purely objective. As a budtender I have spent the last 4 years telling people about the importance of cannabinoid and terpene profiles, and now I was about to spend a day only smoking things without the benefit of having the information I’ve come to greatly appreciate. I was going in blind with each new sample. Normally I would have different, very specific products for different times of the day or different situations. Sativas for the daytime on my days off, something a little more relaxing like an Indica for after work. It was all like a blind taste test.

A Different Product Each Day of Judging

The samples were all numbered, so I began my first day of judging with sample #1. I had everything ready so that it would be the first thing I smoked after work and would be the only thing I smoked till I went to bed. Taking the whole evening to see how I was affected, and what my overall thoughts were. I noted the color of the oil, its consistency, the taste and what sort of high it gave me among other qualities.

As the sampling progressed there were definitely things I that I really enjoyed, and unfortunately others that were not my favorite. When I found ones that I did not necessarily like as much I made sure to give those extra attention. What about the flavor or consistency or effects were not my favorite? If I was going to give something a less than perfect score, I felt it was very important to have specific reasons and feedback.

The funny thing is that about halfway through, as with anything I think there was a feeling of burden. All I wanted was to smoke a joint, but I had dedicated myself to this and I did not want to give any sample anything less than my full attention. I got over this quickly, but I just thought it was funny how even during the opportunity of a lifetime anything that we must do, can feel like an obligation.

I had set specific samples to the side, ones that I wanted to give a second chance to. Some I wanted to try again because they were so good that I wanted to be sure that they held up to a second test. Others I wanted to be sure that I had good reasons why I was giving them the score that I did. I found that one of the cartridges I initially didn’t think I liked that much had a lot of complexity and nuance in the flavor and effects, and after a second try I ended up scoring it higher than I initially had.

After I submitted my final review, I rolled a giant joint and was happy to smoke flower and anything other than a cartridge for a few days. Do not get me wrong, I love cartridges, and had an absolute blast judging, but there is just something I love about a good joint. By this time Corona was in full effect so I was not sure how or when I would hear who the winners were, but I had done my part for the 2020 sun cup.

I spent a total of two and a half weeks with all the samples that were provided to me.

An Email went out that the winners would be announced in a Zoom call award ceremony that was held on Sunday June 21st. It was so fun and exciting to watch and see the winners for different categories, and very cool to see that so many of the winners were companies that we carry at The Novel Tree and The Novel Tree Medical, and that we carried a lot of the specific winning products. We work very hard to have the best products on our shelves, and this was very reaffirming that we are on the right track in terms of who we partner with and the specific products we carry.

It was an amazing opportunity and experience to get to be a judge for the 2020 Sun Cup. I want to thank the Washington Sungrowers Industry Association for the opportunity and all their hard work putting on this event, especially with all the adjustments and precautions necessary during these uncertain times.

The Winners | Available at The Novel Tree Medical

Best THC Cartridge: Puffin Farms EVFO Hindu Kush

Puffin Farms is Clean Green-Certified

Puffin Farms is Clean Green-Certified

The care that went into every stage of this product is evident in the vapor. Puffin Farms EVFO (Extra Virgin Flower Oil) uses a low temperature during extraction to preserve as much of the essence of the plant as possible. Naturally high in terpenes the EVFO cartridges taste unlike any other cartridge on the market. The Hindu Kush is specifically very high in limonene which gives the oil an incredible bright citrus taste, and a naturally uplifting euphoric high. There’s a reason why this one came in first place, come check it out for yourself.

Runner Up, Best Infused Preroll: Puffin Farms Trifecta Big Bubble Dutch

Ever since the first batch of Trifecta pre-rolls came to The Novel Tree Medical they’ve been a customer and consultant favorite. The combination of flower with bubble hash and rosin gives the perfect combination of flavor, potency, and a nice slow burn that makes these perfect for sharing. The flavor is a bit spicy, and a bit earthy but the calming waves of relaxation without sedation makes this the perfect pre-roll for after a hike, or hanging out with friends.

Runner Up, Best Light-Deprived THC: Lazy Bee Miracle Alien Cookies

Grown in the Method Valley

Grown in the Method Valley

The Miracle Alien Cookies is one of those cannabis strains that is perfectly named. The bright euphoric profile will have your head in outer space with the aliens… while you are actually in the kitchen looking for some cookies. A perfect combination of energizing and intoxicating, this is the perfect cannabis for socializing, playing video games, or working in the garden.

Runner Up, Best CBD Flower: Lazy Bee Gardens Sour Tsunami

This very high CBD very low THC offering from Lazy Bee Gardens is the perfect option for a lot of situations. With over 13% CBD and less than 1% THC, its bright uplifting terpene profile means you could smoke this first thing in the morning instead of a cup of coffee for that perfect start to your morning. The powerful anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD are in full effect here as many will use this after work to help relax their body and mind at the end of the day. One of my favorite things to do with a high CBD like this is to mix it with one of my high THC strains. Mix this with another bright sativa for a clear headed energetic effect, or mix with a sedating indica for increased pain relief, relaxation, and a better night sleep.

Outstanding Cannabis Advocate: Micah Sherman of Raven Grass

We are so glad that Micah is being recognized for his incredible advocacy efforts. As long as I have worked at The Novel Tree, Raven Grass has been one of our premier partners. Their focus on breeding classic genetics into interesting new varietals and blending THC and CBD to create powerful potencies and effective ratios has made them a staple in both The Novel Tree and The Novel Tree Medical. The cannabis industry is better because of his efforts and we greatly appreciate his work both in and out of the garden.

Can Cannabis Help Alleviate Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

PTSD, Cannabis and The Healing Process

For a person working through the daily self-care needed to manage their symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), incorporating new practices may become crucial for the healing process. Therapy, as well as finding community with those who have had similar experiences are seen as the foundation to moving past the period of greatest trauma and into a healing space. Often times, medication will be prescribed to help lessen the intensity of the most problematic symptoms. Recently, several important studies have pointed to the potential role cannabis can play in the recovery of those who are living with PTSD. In highlighting these studies, our aim is to share information and learn what we can while not diminishing widely recognized therapies and treatments recommended by trained mental health professionals.

The Studies

Use and Effects of Cannabinoids in Military Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder | 2015

In this study published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, it is concluded that “the evaluated evidence indicates that substantial numbers of military veterans with PTSD use cannabis or derivative products to control PTSD symptoms, with some patients reporting benefits in terms of reduced anxiety and insomnia and improved coping ability.” Link to study

Use of Medicinal Cannabis and Synthetic Cannabinoids in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder | 2019

This Lithuanian study reviewed several other studies up to May, 2019 evaluating the “clinical and therapeutic potentials of medical cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids in treating PTSD patients.” While it’s mentions that more conclude research is needed to establish concrete findings, it states, “Present data show that cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids, both acting on the endocannabinoids system, may have a potential therapeutic use for improving PTSD symptoms, e.g., reducing anxiety, modulating memory-related processes, and improving sleep. Link to study

Cannabis: A Potential Efficacious Intervention for PTSD or Simply Snake Oil? | 2019

This Canadian study by the Department of Neuroscience, Carleton University in Ontario explores the broad implications of medicinal marijuana as beneficial, but recognizes the limited progress in studying it due to legal difficulties. “There have been indications that cannabis or some of its components, primarily THC and CBD, diminish particular symptoms of PTSD…In addition to potentially reducing PTSD symptoms, cannabis also mitigates the propensity for inflammation  and may be useful in psychological conditions that involve elevated inflammatory processes within the brain.” Link to study

Cannabinoids and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Clinical and Preclinical Evidence for Treatment and Prevention | 2016

Clinical trials in Israel offer perhaps the best access for research in the field of medical cannabis. This review concludes that “cannabinoids administered shortly after exposure to a traumatic event were found to prevent the development of PTSD-like phenotype.” While these are animal-based studies, the authors recognize the need for more human-based clinical trials. Terpenes in Marijuana: 5 Most Commonly Found

All throughout the plant world, Marijuana too!

Terpenes, or essential oils, are found throughout the plant world and marijuana is no exception. While clinical studies are still few and far between, it is known that specific strains of cannabis contain varying levels of several different terpenes, and have an effect on the cannabis user. Most labels found on cannabis products will contain a breakdown of these terpene levels. It’s becoming much more common to shop for strains based upon their terpene content, favoring these characteristics over whether a strain is an indica or sativa, or THC and CBD content. The state-certified medical cannabis consultants at The Novel Tree Medical have assisted thousands of people with varying and unique needs, and through this have come to an understanding of the effects that different cannabinoids and terpenes possess. We’ve outlined the 5 most common terpenes found in marijuana and provided a brief explanation of their characteristics.

TNTM_Terpene_Table.jpg

Terpene Effects and Studies

Limonene

Citrus-like Limonene is thought to have anti-anxiety, anti-acne, anti-cancer and digestive-protecting properties. In a 2018 study published by The National Institute of Health, Limonene was found to possess an ability to inhibit lung cancer cell growth in mice.

Pinene

Pinene is thought to have anti-inflammatory, broncho-dilating, antibiotic and memory-boosting properties. A far-reaching 2019 study outlines these characteristics and several more. “To date, most of the investigations have not studied the bioavailability of α-pinene and β-pinene in the human body, though it is clear that these terpenes have antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antiallergic properties.”

Linalool

With it’s Lavender-like aroma, Linalool is thought to have anti-anxiety, pain-relieving, sedative, anti-spasm, and anti-convulsive properties. A 2018 study indicated Linalool produced anxiolytic effects in mice. Linalool is often found in marijuana strains associated with sleepy or sedative effects, making it an option for those who need to wind down at the end of a stressful day.

Caryophyllene

Pepper and spice-tinged Caryophyllene regulates inflammation, nerve pain, fibrosis and has digestive-protecting properties. This terpene is also found in cinnamon and hops, among many other plants. An article in Leafly written by Josh Kaplan, PHD cites Caryophyllene as being beneficial to protect against cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions. Kaplan asserts that more human-based studies are needed to corroborate assertions made about this potentially life-changing terpene.

Myrcene

Exhibiting earthy and fruity undertones, Myrcene is most associated with sedating, muscle-relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties. A 2002 study demonstrated that Myrcene possesses sedative as well as motor relaxant effects. Myrcene is also the predominant terpene found in Chamomile tea, well-known for it’s tranquility-inducing characteristics.

CBD Jellies, Drops, Chocolates and Chews

5 Of Our Favorite CBD Edibles

For those of us who need extended periods of relief throughout their day, CBD edibles are a convenient and tasty option.

CBD edibles come in a wide variety of flavors, textures and shapes and can provide several hours of alleviation in just one piece. It’s important to know the distinction between CBD edibles you find in the grocery store and those found at dispensaries however. By law, CBD found in grocery and drug stores is hemp-derived and contains a very low concentration of CBD, the natural component most associated with providing relief. Hemp-based products have become extremely popular and widely available but have numerous drawbacks such as questionable sourcing and low efficacy. Hemp is primarily used for commercial applications and not cultivated for the purposes of your well-being.

Quality Sourcing Matters!

Fortunately, the marijuana products found in Washington’s dispensaries like The Novel Tree Medical can by law contain much higher levels of CBD. These products contain CBD that is cannabis-derived, and sourced from Washington-grown plants only. The state places thorough regulation on the cannabis growers to ensure the highest level of safety and growing practices. If you purchase CBD at The Novel Tree Medical, there is total transparency when it comes to how we source our products, from where the cannabis plant was grown to where it was made into the edibles you’re purchasing. Not only that, our state-certified medical cannabis consultants can provide guidance and listen to your unique, specific needs.

How Do Marijuana Tinctures Work?

Tinctures are CBD and THC oil drops that typically contain a carrier oil such as coconut, avocado, or olive oil

With a drop under the tongue, they absorb quickly into the bloodstream and may help provide relief for a variety of chronic symptoms. They can also be added to tea or your favorite drink or soft food.

Why Consider Tinctures?

One of the best aspects of tincture use is the ability to control dosage. Unlike capsules or other solid edibles that contain marijuana extracts, it is easier to moderate intake and build up to a comfort level that suits you best. Try a drop or two at first to get a sense of how it will affect you, and slowly build over future doses.

We've found that many people prefer a consistent number of doses over the course of the day, while others like to dose when their symptoms flare up for immediate relief. Each person is unique in this respect, so our anecdotal evidence is broad and varied.

• Easy to moderate dosage

• Wide variety of strengths and ratios

• Safe, natural ingredients

• Reliable and consistent

• Customizable treatments

Many people need less than what is considered the 'standard' serving size. Using the pipette dropper that comes with each tincture, you can very easily titrate and customize your serving size to best suit your individual needs. The dropper also allows the user to easily administer the same amount each time. When it comes to medicinal usage, consistency is key.

Choosing the Right Tincture

Tinctures carried by The Novel Tree Medical can be categorized into High CBD, High THC or some ratio of CBD to THC. As a general rule, no tincture will contain more than 100mg of THC. From this point, there are a variety of ratios that descend all the way down to virtually no THC. Depending on your symptoms and what your desired outcome is, our consultants will work with you to find the ideal levels of these components. It's important to keep in mind that there may be some trial and error involved in finding your ideal product.

We carry a wide variety of tinctures from the best suppliers in Washington, and conduct periodic inspections to ensure quality for our guests.

There are other factors at play in addition to CBD and THC content. Terpenes are naturally occurring botanical compounds found in cannabis. Like other plant-based medicines, it's these organic properties that contribute to your alleviation. Limonene, for example, is a terpene known for relieving stress and anxiety, and also contains antibacterial properties. Our consultants have an extensive knowledge of terpenes and take them into consideration when making a product recommendation.

Make a Homemade Face Mask for Family and Friends

Have an old t-shirt? They work great for the ear loops.

Have an old t-shirt? They work great for the ear loops.

Face masks are an important item to bring along when venturing out for groceries or any other needs that will bring you into contact with others. With basic sewing techniques and materials, you can make them yourself with relative ease. A friend of ours recently used this easy follow-along video from Northwest makers Dustin Klein and Klum House to produce several masks for their family, and we think you’ll agree the results are quite stylish! Be sure to clean and sanitize your mask between each use and follow CDC travel guidelines, even for short local trips.

Start Planting Your Seasonal Garden

Many plant nurseries in the Seattle and Bellevue area are open and practicing social distancing for the safety of patrons. Remember to tote along your mask and gloves on your way to picking up some new plant starts like tomatoes, herbs or leafy greens! Here’s an excellent guide for Northwest growers from Portland Edible Gardens. The middle of May is the best time to plant!

Learn How To Figure Draw

The basis of learning to draw a person is figure drawing using basic shapes to indicate the human form. Many people attend classes for years to master this, but there are some great resources for prospective at-home artists, and all you’ll need for materials is any old pencil and an eraser. Seattle artist Juliette Aristides published Figure Drawing Atelier recently, drawing on her vast experience as an instructor at Gage Academy of Art in Capitol Hill. This step-by-step guide is easy to follow, and available for home delivery here on Amazon!

Anxiety in the Age of COVID-19: What About Cannabis?

With the coronavirus on everyone’s mind, we have seen an increase in people considering medical marijuana to help ease their anxiety.

This is something that, anecdotally, people have been doing for centuries, and we are beginning to see the studies and data that back this up the assertion that cannabis is a viable option for those suffering from increased anxiety and stress.

New to Medical Marijuana?

Everyone’s body reacts differently to cannabis, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. However, there are places to start when looking to use a cannabis products.

If you are new to cannabis we always advise “Start low, go slow”. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, and how cannabis interacts with that system is unique. Dr. Ethan Russo refers to this as endocannabinoid tone; an individual’s level of endogenous (internal) cannabinoids that will affect how phyto (plant based) cannabinoids interact with the system. Basically, your body produces chemicals like THC and CBD, and these chemicals are how your body keeps many different systems in balance. Whenever a system in our body is over or under-stimulated, it produces these chemicals to help bring that system back into balance.

A dose is different for every Body

An ideal human body doesn’t have issues maintaining balance between its systems, but for many reasons including biology, diet, or trauma, we may not be producing enough of these stasis-inducing chemicals. This can be exacerbated by external stresses, especially in times like we’re currently experiencing.

A body out of balance may produce symptoms like anxiety, inflammation, pain, nausea, or sleeplessness. When our systems need more help maintaining balance, it may require higher dosages of cannabinoids to achieve optimal results. We have had guests come in that have never used cannabis that have very high tolerances and require very high dosages to help alleviate their systems. It’s not bad to have a high tolerance, it just means your body requires more cannabinoids to achieve the desired results.

CBD Effects

If you are new to cannabis, then starting with a high CBD product could be the best way to go. CBD’s inherent ability to regulate things that are over-stimulated seems to be very effective for reducing anxiety. Different ways of using cannabis are going to provide different effects. Eating an edible or using a capsule or tincture can provide long lasting relief, sometimes lasting up to 8 hours. However edible products can take anywhere from 30 minutes to up to 2 hours to begin to feel the effects. In a stressful situation the long delay in onset can be less than ideal. Inhalation of a smokable product like from a pipe or vaporizer cartridge can provide more immediate relief. The effects from a smokable product will typically last 1-2 hours.

For many a combination of products to provide immediate and long-lasting relief will be the most effective option.

CBD Products

Pictured above: Fairwinds Am/PM Relief tinctures, Plantworks Lazy Susan flower, Heylo Remedy vape cartridge. These products all contain high CBD levels.

THC: Keep the Dose Low, But Present

For those that are already using cannabis recreationally but might want something for anxiety, there are a few ways to go about this. THC has something called biphasic effects, this means a small amount and large amount will have opposite effects from each other. THC in small amounts regulates neurotransmitters and can help to calm down over stimulation related to anxiety or pain. However, in large amounts THC will stimulate those receptors and might induce anxiety.

To make sure you don’t get too much THC at once and induce anxiety, try packing small bowls, or only taking one or two hits at a time from a vape pen or dabs. By taking a smaller dose and self-monitoring how you’re feeling, you can really get a good sense of where you’re at. You can also use products that have equal amounts of THC and CBD, we refer to these as 1:1 ratio products.

Today you can get smokable, edible, and topical products in 1:1 ratio, so whatever your preferred method of consumption The Novel Tree Medical will have an option for you. With the 1:1 ratio, we find that there is typically enough THC to get the enjoyable recreational benefits from cannabis, but also enough CBD to ensure that there isn’t too much over stimulation from the THC. For many, this balance works well for anxiety, pain, and sleep. For immediate relief try an inhalable product like a vaporizer cartridge, or for longer lasting effects try an edible or tincture.

1:1 Ratio Products

Pictured above: Fairwinds Release tincture, Raven Grass Gilda vape cartridge, Washington Bud Co. flower. These products all contain equal amounts of CBD and THC. This is known as a 1:1 ratio.

Take Care of Yourself

There is a reason that in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic cannabis has been deemed essential by many states including Washington. The times can feel overwhelming but taking the time to care for yourself by getting physical exercise, taking a few minutes to quietly meditate, or smoking a joint with a 1:1 ratio are all great ways to help deal with anxiety. Feel free to call or email us to speak to a Department of Health Certified Medical Cannabis Consultant if you have any questions about incorporating cannabis into your life.

Lesser-Known Cannabinoids

The cannabis plant produces hundreds of different cannabinoids. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledges that “the marijuana plant has chemicals that may help symptoms for some health problems.”

There are over 1000 companies growing and producing cannabis products in Washington state. Our focus at The Novel Tree Medical is to have the cleanest, highest quality, and widest variety of products to help Alleviate variety of symptoms.

Most people are familiar with THC and CBD, but in terms of potential benefits this plant  may have  we are just scratching the surface  focusing on these two components. “Lesser” cannabinoids, such as THCA, CBDA, Delta 8 THC, CBG and CBT, tend to be found in small percentages in the plant. With new breeding and extraction methods, we are starting to see products with significant levels of these cannabinoids.

As cannabis continues to become more accepted throughout the country, we will see more tests and studies done on the lesser cannabinoids. This is one of the most exciting parts about our job; through advancement in science and policy change, we will have a better understanding about what these lesser cannabinoids are, what they can do, and how they can provide relief to those in the future

THCA & CBDA

The cannabis plant produces THCA and CBDA, the acidic precursors to THC and CBD. While these cannabinoids don’t have the same intoxicating effects as THC, that certainly doesn’t mean they don’t have other qualities. THCA is currently being investigated for its potential benefits as an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotectant. Because THCA can interact with the CB1 receptors in the brain and the gut, it can be used as an anti-emetic to help reduce nausea. CBDA is currently being researched because of its affinity for serotonin receptors (the same receptors that are targeted by SSRI medication).

Lesser_Known_Cannabinoids_1.jpg

THCA and CBDA

Fairwinds 1:1 FECO is an amazing and unique product as it delivers equal amounts of THC, CBD, THCA, and CBDA. This powerful blend of cannabinoids and terpenes with a proprietary extraction method that preserves flavonoids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols provides one of the most effective cannabis products on the market today for severe and chronic conditions.

Delta-8 THC

The official name for the THC that we all  know  and love is Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol;  Delta 8 THC is a variant of THC that appears to be 33% less intoxicating than traditional THC, it also seems to have an affinity for the gut. The very consistent feedback that we get from products with D8-THC is that it can reduce nausea while stimulating appetite. Many people that we help going through cancer treatments, or with certain illness of the gut have reported tremendous relief with products containing Delta 8 THC.

Lesser_Known_Cannabinoids_2.jpg

Delta-8 THC

From JV Ranch we have the Delta 8 / CBD 1:1 ratio RSO. The equal combination of CBD and Delta 8 THC provides a non-intoxicating effect throughout the whole body, while reducing nausea and stimulating appetite. Great for pain, stress and anxiety, or issues of the gut a little bit of this RSO in the morning is a great way to start the day.

CBG

Known as the Mother Cannabinoid, CBG is the first cannabinoid produced in the cannabis plants. Through the plant’s life, enzymes will convert CBG into THC, CBD or CBC. While most plants are harvested after this conversion, selective breeding allows growers to harness the mood enhancing effects that CBG seems to provide (we lovingly refer to CBG as CB-Giggles). It has also been researched for its anti-inflammatory qualities, reducing intraocular eye pressure for glaucoma patients, as well as reducing inflammation of the gut experienced by IBS patients. Some studies also show CBG as an effective anti-bacterial agent, especially against MRSA.

Lesser_Known_Cannabinoids_3.jpg

CBG

The CBG Blend Cartridge from Heylo has the highest levels of CBG that we’ve ever seen in any cannabis product. With 42% THC and a staggering 16% CBG, this cartridge is uplifting and euphoria-inducing. Heylo characterizes the effects from their CBG Blend cartridge as being good for dancing, socializing (at a distance), relief, and the best day ever. After trying this one for ourselves we would definitely have to agree with Heylo’s assessment.

CBT

CBT (Cannabacitran) is one of the most recent cannabinoids to be identified in the cannabis plant. CBT seems to appear as the byproduct of processing cannabis oil, more likely to be found in high CBD distillates. While we don’t yet know the way that CBT interacts with receptors throughout our body or what specific effects it may have, we are excited to see what further research brings us. See this great exploratory blog post on CBT from our friends at Heylo.

CBT

Skagit Organics Sour Tsunami CBD Distillate. Skagit Organics provides an incredible laboratory analysis on their packaging, listing 11 different cannabinoids. This gives a much better idea about a product than just THC and CBD testing. While we would typically highlight this product for a great high CBD (71%) to low THC (5.8%) ratio the level of CBT (3.5%) is the highest that we’ve seen in a product to date.

CBD:THC Ratios, What Does it All Mean?

Understanding Cannabis Ratios

Historically, cannabis naturally had varying ratios of CBD:THC. Even before the legalization of cannabis, breeders were focused on maximizing the amount of THC in their plants as the focus became more recreational. However, as we explore the emerging awareness around CBD, and as CBD grows in popularity across the country, more breeders are now creating strains with diverse CBD:THC ratios to meet the demand. So what is a ratio, and how will I know what ratio is best for my needs? 1

THC and CBD: The two primary cannabinoids

Our body has a system called the Endocannabinoid system that is responsible for regulating other systems throughout the body. So, when something is out of balance, either over stimulated or under stimulated, the endocannabinoid system is responsible for bringing it back to homeostasis. THC stimulates receptors primarily in the central nervous system; the brain, the spinal column, and the gut. CBD modulates receptors in the central & peripheral nervous systems, and the immune system.

What is a CBD:THC Ratio?

Simply put, a CBD:THC ratio shows the amount of CBD in relation to the amount of THC in a cannabis product. You can have a CBD:THC ratio in any form of cannabis, including flower, concentrates, edibles, topicals, tinctures, and capsules. Finding your ideal ratio will depend on your personal tolerance and the experience you’re seeking. 2

Every product at The Novel Tree Medical will be labeled with a breakdown the CBD:THC ratio.

Every product at The Novel Tree Medical will be labeled with a breakdown the CBD:THC ratio.

How to Read Ratios and Doses

Anytime you see a product that features a ratio, the first number will reflect the amount of CBD in a product. The second number featured shows the amount of THC in the same product. For example, a 10:1 Ratio tincture has 10x the amount of CBD as THC. It is important to know that CBD comes first, as you may come across ratios that have more THC than CBD. Each ratio has its own range of effects, so it’s best to talk with a medical consultant to find the ratio that best suits your needs.

Let’s Explore a 5:1 Ratio Cannabis Product

The Potency on the far left-hand column shows the amount of THC and CBD in the packaging. The suggested serving of 0.6ml will contain 11mg CBD and 2.4mg of THC in a 5:1 ratio.

Ratio_Blog_3.jpg

The potency in the 5:1 is a total (TTL) of 200mg, however you can see that there is approximately five times the amount of CBD in relation to the amount of THC. Many guests will start with .3 ml (1/2 of a standard serving). Because all producers are required to list the potency, tinctures and edibles make it easy to control your serving.

While it can be difficult to gauge an exact serving from flower or a vaporizer, knowing the potency of your product in advance can help you anticipate the effects to come. Fairwinds lists the average potency as well as the terpenes featured in their products. A terpene profile can provide additional insight to the experience you can expect from said product.

Common Ratios

1:1 Ratio – Having equal parts CBD and THC seems to be the most effective in tackling pain management. The goal of utilizing a 1:1 product is to induce a gentle buzz while allowing the consumer to function and focus throughout the day. While CBD affects inflammation throughout the body, THC regulates neurotransmitters and how the brain perceives pain. The 1:1 ratio provides both mental and physical relief from pain. While this ratio is not considered “recreational”, 1:1 products can be easily found at most dispensaries. 2

2:1 Ratio – Having twice the amount of CBD as THC can still provide a slight buzz, but it should be minimal compared to 1:1 strains and recreational products. This ratio might be ideal for those looking to combat autoimmune disorders, anxiety, depression, or general aches and pains.

5:1 Ratio – This ratio is an excellent place to start for those who are new to cannabis, or experienced consumers who are looking for products that will allow them to function without intoxication. Fairwinds 5:1 Ratio Tincture offers an invigorating blend of terpenes to accentuate the therapeutic benefits of the CBD. 3

1:2 Ratio – This ratio allows you to enjoy the psychoactive effects of THC, with an enhanced body high from the CBD. Often recommended as a sleep aid, this ratio can be more sedative depending on the terpene profile of the product. 4

We’re Here to Answer Your Questions About CBD and THC

It can be a challenge navigating the available products on the market, especially when you’re seeking relief. If you have any questions about what ratio may best suit your needs, we encourage you to reach out or stop in for a visit with our consultants. Cannabis vs. Alcohol

Weighing the risks, cannabis may be favorable to alcohol in several respects

When Relaxing after work or socializing with friends and family, many of us reach for alcohol. there are compelling reasons why you may want to reconsider and opt for cannabis instead

For many, alcohol consumption is a frequent activity associated with evenings or weekends, helping to put a hard day behind us. Marking the transition from daily responsibility to down time, a glass is often raised with a sense of relief. With the rise of recreational cannabis in the United States however, the dynamic is beginning to change ever so slightly. More and more, people are discovering or rediscovering the social aspects of cannabis and are ditching the drinks for some form of cannabis. With the rise of recreational cannabis consumption, there is an emergent need to discuss the differences between the two.

What’s Less Destructive, Cannabis or Alcohol?

Cannabis and alcohol both possess certain intoxicating effects, which can make it hard to discern when we have consumed too much, or when we have become addicted to the substance we socialize with. There are several factors to take into consideration when comparing the consumption of alcohol to the consumption of cannabis.

We’ve cited some studies comparing cannabis vs. alcohol, here’s our takeaway:

• Chronic alcohol abuse may cause permanent changes in your brain, often leading to impaired brain function (1)

• The Lancet published a study that found alcohol to be the most harmful drug to others in terms of acts of violence. (2)

• The National Center for Biotechnology Information found that couples who use marijuana are less likely to experience intimate partner violence. (3)

• Marijuana is the second most detected substance in drivers who were involved in car accidents. The Elsevier study shows that drivers under the influence of marijuana are 83% more likely to be in a car accidents. While that likelihood seems high, it is relatively low compared to the 2200% increased chance for those driving under the influence of alcohol. (4)

• Repeated consumption of alcohol has the potential to cause cancer. The National Toxicology Program of the US Department of Health lists consumption of alcoholic beverages as a known human carcinogen. (5)

Cannabis: It’s less harmful than Alcohol?

In the past 50 years there have been no medically proven cases of beneficial alcohol consumption. Cannabis, however, has proven it is a pharmacopoeia powerhouse whose true potential has yet to be researched and documented by the established science community. Research has proven that long term, overconsumption of alcohol may lead to potential detrimental organ complications. While we aren’t out to demonize the the consumption or responsible use of alcohol, it’s important that we highlight these very real risks. Even with cannabis, moderation is key. It’s simply the profound evidence of the risks alcohol that cannot be ignored.

Cannabis Concentrates: Potent and Powerful

Why high potency concentrates are necessary in a licensed and legal cannabis market.

Historically speaking, medicines and remedies have been made by taking plants, roots, seeds, or leaves and concentrating the active compounds to become even more efficacious.

The same has been true with cannabis for thousands of years. Until the early 1900’s it was common for a doctor to recommend a concentrated cannabis product, usually in the form of a tincture for pain, sleep, and a host of other ailments.

Since the residents of Washington State voted to legalize recreational cannabis there has been a renaissance in cannabis extraction. A beautiful blend of art and science has come together to extract as much of the active compounds from the cannabis plant while leaving only vegetative plant matter behind.

Cannabis concentrates come in a wide variety of forms. Pictured here: Terp Sugar, RSO and FECO.

Cannabis concentrates come in a wide variety of forms. Pictured here: Terp Sugar, RSO and FECO.

Why do some people choose cannabis concentrates?

These concentrated products have been used by many people in both the recreational and medicinal space. Many are dealing with chronic pain, the symptoms of cancer treatments, epilepsy, ailments of the gut like IBS and IBD, PTSD, CTE, & TBI. Others find that the higher potency products are not only more effective in terms of relief but also in terms of cost. As every ailment is different, having a variety of strengths and potency is necessary for helping as many people as possible.

When Potency and Strength is Considered

These concentrated products are also something that recreational cannabis users can enjoy. Exactly like the difference in alcohol percentages between beer and liquor, the difference between flower and concentrates just determines the experience an individual has. We all know and understand that a 12-ounce beer and a 1.5 ounce shot of liquor are considered a serving of alcohol. Similarly, a much smaller amount of a cannabis concentrate (often referred to as a dab) is required compared to smoking the buds of the cannabis plant in a joint or in a pipe. Also, like alcohol, if someone uses too much cannabis in any form it can lead to nausea and an uncomfortable experience that can last several hours. Unlike alcohol, ingesting too much cannabis won’t lead to a hangover or a potentially fatal overdose like alcohol poisoning. Cannabis concentrates also tend to smell much less than the buds of the plant which is beneficial where discretion is necessary.

Regulation and Quality Assurance in Washington

In Washington, all regulated cannabis products are tested for potency. This is a vital and essential benefit that legalization has over the black market. Before cannabis was fully regulated there were no controls for potency, pesticides, molds, mildews, and many other things that no one should be smoking. This is especially true when that plant is going to be turned into a cannabis concentrate which could then concentrate any of those undesirable components. Knowing the specific potency of not just the THC and CBD, but also the terpene profile provides a level of assurance for a customer that they are getting the best product for whatever they are looking to use it for.

Due to their potency, lack of smell, cost effectiveness and the testing provided in Washington’s legal cannabis market, concentrates may be a viable option for both recreational and medical cannabis users.

Cannabis Edibles and Microdosing

many Look to edibles for Alternative ways to consume Cannabis without smoking or vaping.

Edibles are an excellent option for those who are looking to stray from smoking. While it takes 1-2 hours to feel the effects of an edible, the effects are often stronger and longer lasting (6-10 hours). Patience is key when you’re exploring edibles for the first time.

Advantages of Edibles

Cannabis has been cited by many to be effective in alleviating aches and pains, easing anxiety, promoting a restful night’s sleep, and more. But not all cannabis products are made the same. A product formulated for sleep may not be the best for pain management for example. Navigating through the hundreds of edibles on the market can be a challenge, especially for those new to cannabis.

Often, CBD or THC alone is not as effective for tackling medical ailments. The key to maximum relief is finding the right ratio and dosage. A Certified Cannabis Consultant can help guide you to finding the right products to meet your needs.

Mr. Moxey’s Mints are a popular choice for microdosing cannabis. They are available in a variety of formulations and ratios.

Mr. Moxey’s Mints are a popular choice for microdosing cannabis. They are available in a variety of formulations and ratios.

Microdosing Cannabis Edibles

Cannabis has immediate and cumulative effects when utilized over time. We’ve found that smaller amounts throughout the day can provide more relief than having one concentrated dose per day. Mr. Moxey’s Mints have gained popularity for their discrete packaging and wide range of ratios. Whether you’re looking to ease digestive distress, or just need a pick-me-up there’s a Mr. Moxey’s Mint that may suit your needs.

Another option for micro-dosing is utilizing a tincture. Tinctures allow you to control your own dose to ensure you’re staying within your therapeutic window. To avoid any adverse effects, start low and go slow. You can always take a larger dose next time if you need more relief. A sublingual option allows for faster absorption into the bloodstream than a traditional edible.

Finding Your Ideal Dose

Cannabis-infused chocolates are available in a wide variety of strengths and ratios.

Cannabis-infused chocolates are available in a wide variety of strengths and ratios.

Washington state has taken the guess work out of figuring out your dose. While 10mg may not seem like much, it can provide a potent experience that lasts 6-10 hours. You can pick up single candies as low as $3, or stock up with a ten pack of your favorite chocolates or candies. Additionally, you can divide your edible into smaller, more manageable doses. In most edibles, the cannabinoids are dispersed evenly throughout each piece.

Healthy fats may help your system absorb an edible with greater efficiency, leading to stronger effects. If you’re trying to find a strong edible, look to chocolates and cookies. Edibles with a 1:1 ratio can also be used recreationally. The CBD can provide a more uplifting body experience compared to a THC only treat.

Creating the Optimum Experience

If you’re an experienced consumer or trying edibles for the first time, having the right set and setting enhances your experience. Here are some tips for having the ideal experience with an edible:

• If you’re consuming at home, tidy around the house. No need for unnecessary anxiety!

• Get your favorite TV shows and movies on your Netflix queue. Feeling musical? Put together a playlist to enjoy!

• Edibles are not exempt from causing the munchies. Stock up with your favorite snacks ahead of time. Fresh fruit can help combat the munchies and dry mouth all in one!

• Keep yourself hydrated. Having soda and juice may sound the most appealing, but make sure you’re getting enough water.

• Start low & go slow. The 1-2 hours it takes for your edible to kick in can seem like a lifetime. Be patient and enjoy!

Migraine Headaches and Medical Cannabis

Once used as a treatment for Migraines, Medical Cannabis is once again considered as a form of relief.

Cannabis was used by notable physicians as a Remedy for migraines from 1839 until Marijuana prohibition in 1937.

Statistics show that more than 38 million people in the US suffer from migraine disease. While cannabis use has been on the rise for medical ailments, many have not yet explored the option to utilize its properties for this disease. Cannabis been reported by many to to reduce the symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite that are associated with migraines.

Research has also confirmed that migraines can be a result of an endocannabinoid deficiency of 2AG and anandamide within the body, the compounds that are most similar to CBD and THC. Supplementing with cannabis-derived cannabinoids can potentially help alleviate symptoms associated with headaches and migraines.

Recent Research: Cannabis for Migraines

Carrie Cuttler, a Washington State University assistant professor of psychology has recently conducted a study which found that inhaled cannabis seems to reduce the severity of self-reported headaches by nearly 48% and migraine severity by nearly 50% in users.

“The present study indicates that inhaled cannabis reduces headache and migraine severity ratings by approximately 50%. Repeated use of cannabis is associated with tolerance to its effects, making tolerance a risk factor for the use of cannabis to treat headache and migraine. However, cannabis does not lead to the medication overuse headache that is associated with other conventional treatments, meaning that use of cannabis does not make headaches or migraines worse over time.” (1)

Products we’ve recommended for Migraines:

Harlequin Entourage Oil

This whole-plant cannabis oil has been extracted from the strain Harlequin, a high CBD strain typically found in a 2:1 ratio and has been found by many to reduce the severity of migraine symptoms. An extract in this form is meant for oral consumption and can provide relief between 6-10 hours. Start by eating a small rice grain size of oil on a cracker and wait 1-2 hours.

Migraine_Headache_Cannabis_4.jpg

Comotion Balm

Many migraine sufferers experience pain and tension around the eyebrow, temples, and forehead which can impair vision and make it difficult to continue daily activities. Along with inhaled or orally-consumed cannabis, it can be helpful to use an infused topical for maximized relief. We have found that the Heylotion 2:1 Balm seems to alleviate discomfort when massaged into the temples every couple of hours, as needed for relief.

Seasonal Depression: What About Medical Cannabis?

New studies suggest a link between specific terpenes and mental well-being

“While there are limited studies on how the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) affects depression, researchers are recognizing that the way cannabis affects our ECS does contribute to the complex neuronal network in our brains and can be applied in the treatment of depression.”[1] -Dr. Junella Chin

While most recreational users focus on THC, CBD, and whichever other minor cannabinoid social media has brought to the limelight, there’s an increasing awareness in the Medical Cannabis space that terpenes should be considered as a primary indicator of what characteristics or effects a specific strain may have. Terpenes are responsible for the varied scents we experience when we smell the cannabis product before, during, and after vaping, dabbing, or smoking cannabis, they are also known as the essential oils of the cannabis plant.

Plant terpenes exist across all plant-life and possess a wide array of medicinal properties. These compounds have been increasingly studied for their therapeutic potentials, some of which being the treatment of anxiety and depression.[2]

Specific terpenes may affect seasonal depression by:

·        Helping Control Anxiety

·       Aiding with insomnia

·       Improving appetite

·       Boosting mood

Mood-Boosting Terpenes

Pre-clinical studies have indicated that the terpenes linalool, limonene, myrcene, and β-caryophyllene, amongst others, possess anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. Essential oils have been utilized for varying therapeutic uses ranging from sleep aids, to antiseptic aids used to treat minor skin burns. Because terpenes can be found in other botanical sources, additional studies of non-cannabis derived terpenes corroborated the findings of recent preclinical studies. For example, lavender, which contains the terpene known as Linalool, is known for its calming and sedating effects.[4]

Terpenes to avoid in anxious times

There are also terpenes to avoid that may be very stimulating and may increase anxiety. The two major terpenes to avoid would be pinene and cymene. These both have an opposite effect as linalool where it will extend the breakdown of acetylcholine, the more acetylcholine in the brain the more focused and stimulated the brain seems to be. This can be beneficial for studying, for exercising or doing sports, but overly-stimulating for someone dealing with anxiety.

Categorizing Cannabis through Terpenes

With the cannabis market currently centered around classifying plants as Sativas, Indicas or Hybrids, terpene profiles allow us to make better-informed decisions when seeking out strain alternatives.

Cannabis Plant Taxonomy

Traditional Classifications: Indica and Sativa

Biologists refer to the science of naming, defining and classifying organisms on the basis of their shared characteristics as Taxonomy. The need to taxonomize cannabis arose with the discovery of different strains from different parts of the world. Some cannabis plants look short and stubby while others look rather tall and lanky; several are a combination of the two predominant visual queues. For example, Cannabis Sativa typically grows tall and lanky while Cannabis Indica typically grows short and stubby. However, thanks to modern day cannabis research that has been performed in the last decade, the need for us to evolve from this traditional nomenclature is apparent.

Cannabis leaves contain naturally occurring essential oils known as terpenes. These oils are not exclusive only to cannabis, they occur in every living plant. The terpene profile of a given cannabis strain will inform the experience one has after in…

Research leads to a better understanding of cannabis Types

While several cannabis plants may look the same, they often vary in scents and aromas aside from their visual aesthetics. The smell of the cannabis plant largely depends on the essential oils of cannabis known as Terpenoids. Thanks to the research lead by great minds like Dr. Ethan Russo, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, Arno Hazekamp, Mark Lewis, and Matthew Geise, we now understand that Terpenoids share a vital role in the medical value and psychoactive effects when consuming cannabis. When taken in a non-isolated format, cannabis and its chemical constituents operate in concert to provide a sought-out consumption experience when the consumer is aware of the cannabinoid and terpenoid content.

When traditional classification provides a misleading consumption experience

Have you ever tried an Indica strain that hit like a Sativa and/or a Sativa strain that hit like an Indica?

This is a prime example as to why making a purchase based on the terpene content is the best way to make an informed decision, (rather than whether it’s labelled Indica or Sativa).

The following provides a brief highlight of some of the most common terpenes found in cannabis, as well as some of the benefits they may provide. Please note that the FDA has not approved the use of Cannabis derived essential oils or terpenes to treat or cure any ailment.

A great value, The Fairwinds FLOW Holiday Gift Box is now available at The Novel Tree Medical.

Perfect for spreading a little extra holiday cheer this winter, each box contains a sample of each of their three topical formulas: gel, cream, and roll-on; the combination of each of these makes it clear to see why this company was awarded “Best Topical Provider”! Whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for a gift for a loved one, this gift set might just be the perfect thing to cross off of your list.

While each of the three products that make up the FLOW family of topicals is similar, they all confer their own unique set of benefits and best-use practices - meaning this boxed set is ideal both for those who already love the products and for those looking to try them out!

FLOW Gel

The first topical introduced by Fairwinds, is a gel base with a light scent. Perfect for inflamed joints and sore muscles, the gel is CBD-rich with just a small amount of THC per jar. The gel base means that you feel the effects much more quickly than with other water-based topicals; effects are usually felt within a few minutes as opposed to much longer wait times!

FLOW Cream

The cream (while equally as fast-acting and effective as the gel) is formulated using hyaluronic acid and ceramides, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin or looking to promote overall skin health. It also contains Fairwinds’ own proprietary CannaVera extract; made using every part of the plant and containing beneficial lipids and other compounds like polysaccharides! FLOW cream is one of Washington’s best-selling topicals, and it only takes one use to see why.

FLOW Roll-On

The Roll-On is newest addition to the Fairwinds topical lineup, took home a High Times award after just a month on the market. Designed to lend the same benefits Fairwinds customers have come to expect from a FLOW product with the convenience of a roll-on applicator, this little container is certainly a powerhouse.

Great on their own, even better together - pick up your FLOW gift set today! For more information in these products, please visit the Fairwinds website.
