Cannabis

3 Easy Ways to Manage Small Doses

Small doses of cannabis may help you manage chronic pain while remaining clearheaded when it matters most.

There are now a wide variety of ways to achieve the perfect small dose

While the immediate effects of a large hit from a vape pen or pipe can be clearly felt and provide relief to your symptoms of chronic pain, finding the appropriate setting to do so during the day is often elusive. While cannabis may be legal in Washington state, most who consume it for medical purposes wouldn’t do so as casually as someone opening up a bottle of Tylenol, and that is totally understandable. Relief, most often times, needs to come in a discrete form as you go about your day. Fortunately in recent years, the Washington state cannabis industry has created a number of products that allow people to do just that. A small dose can come in the form of a tincture, an edible, an inhaler and more. The ratio of CBD to THC is an important factor in dosing as well. We now have access to more ratios than ever that help us control any possible psychoactive effects that a cannabis product may have. When consumed on a consistent basis in small doses, the cumulative effects of cannabis may help with symptoms as much a single more concentrated dose.

Inhalers

Each puff from an inhaler provides a 2.5mg microdose which makes it easy to take 1 puff for a small serving, or multiple puffs as needed. There is no odor associated with inhalers, making them an incredibly discrete option.

Tinctures

Another discrete option is utilizing a tincture. They allow you to control your own dose to ensure you’re staying within your therapeutic window. Start low and go slow. You can always take a larger dose next time if you need more relief.

Edibles

Edibles or mints are a good option for those seeking to avoid smoking or vaping. Edibles typically take 1-2 hours to feel the effects and can last anywhere from 6-10 hours. There are a great number of low THC options available that will help you minimize intoxication. Patience is key when using edibles for the first time, as the onset time is much longer than other products.

A Judge’s Perspective: The 2021 Craft Cannabis Cup

Matt Kovarsky On judging the Indoor Cannabis category at this year’s Craft Cannabis Cup

TNT_Med_Consultant_Matt_Circle.jpg

Working in the cannabis industry can be surreal at times.

I’ve found myself in rooms where cannabis plants stretch as far as the eye can see. I have seen weed in bags piled from floor to ceiling. More recently, I have been fortunate enough to be able to judge a cannabis competition.

The Washington Sungrowers Industry Association (WSIA) is a group of sun-grown and craft cannabis growers, many of whom have been available at The Novel Tree or The Novel Tree Medical for years now. The WSIA has hosted the Sun Cup for outdoor growers, and this was the first year where indoor growers were invited to participate in the first Craft Cannabis Cup. Products were divided into categories like Indoor flower, full term flower, light dep flower, infused pre-rolls, concentrates, edibles, and topicals.

Since cannabis is so unique and special to the individual plant or strain, it can be a very intimidating prospect to rank or judge it. Every sample represents months and years of hard work, growing, and breeding. Even how cannabis affects you is subjective. If you smoke the same thing at different times of the day, or doing different activities, it will affect you differently. So how do you judge cannabis? That was something I struggled with initially when I first received my much-anticipated bag of samples.

Getting Organized: The Judging Begins

Arranging my sample bags, the first thing that I did was line them all up and take them in visually. They were each assigned a random number so that I would be able to keep everything in order as I sampled and judged. Next, I looked closely at each sample and smelled them. I studied the bud structure and density, examining how well each plant was cured, the different colors, and again my favorite thing, the smell. Some of the plants had the most incredible citrus aromas, some like orange, some tropical. Some buds were so purple they were almost black and had the most noxious gas smells (not a bad thing!) that would make a skunk pause and take a note of appreciation. There were beautiful bright green buds, with bright pine smells.  All of them stunning in their own way, but it was now my job to figure out which of these really stood out as special and unique.

Sampling Each Amazing Strain While Remaining Objective

I had my plan in place, 1 sample a day until judging was over. This way I could give each plant a fair, objective shake. However, I knew that there would be times that I would get a bright energizing sativa after working all day. I had to remember that even though it was not the right set and setting for those effects, to not hold that against the bud.

I would test each sample the same way. Spend time looking at the bud under a flashlight, squeezing the bud, breaking it a part, grinding it in my grinder, smelling it after it had been freshly ground, and finally packing up my Pax 3 vaporizer. I took notes of anything that made the sample stand out.

I always started my vaporizer at low temperature, this is typically better for demonstrating the terpene profile and really experiencing the taste as well as possible. After starting at low temp vaping for the best flavor profile, I would start to turn up the temperature to get more of the cannabinoids. As I turned up the temperature the effects became more prominent. All of the samples were high THC, so regardless of stimulating or relaxing effects, they all got me pleasantly stoned.

When I discovered a sample that really stood apart from the rest, I would set anything I didn’t finish in my first session aside to test it again at the end for my final judging. While everything was amazing, some of the best cannabis flower from some of the best growers in Washington, there were some that really rose above the rest. I do want to reiterate, there was no bad weed in the samples. It was all phenomenal and world-class. Since everything was high THC, I did however look for attributes that would make a sample really stand out among the crowd of talented contemporaries.

The Final Votes Are Tallied

In the end I had 5 samples that I felt were very special, and things that I would be especially excited to show a guest when they came in the store. I gave each of them a second try before coming up with my final scores, trying to be as objective as possible. Submitting my reviews and scores, I anxiously anticipated hearing the the winners announced. Instead of having a ceremony like years passed, this year the winners were presented over a Zoom-based ceremony due to COVID restrictions.

It was amazing to see so many products carried at The Novel Tree and The Novel Tree Medical come out on top as winners (reiterating that the judging was blind, and there was no way to know which samples you were given). After the winners were announced, judges were given a list of what each sample number corresponded too, and it was fun to put names to the samples and see how the ones I ranked highest stacked up against the competition.

It was an absolute privilege to be included as a judge for the 2021 Craft Cannabis Cup. I want to thank the WSIA for the opportunity, and their continued commitment to supporting craft cannabis growers, and sungrown cannabis growers.

CBD Tea Recipe: Quick, Easy and Relaxing

CBD Tea Couldn’t Be Easier with Tinctures

CBD tea is a warming, relaxing option for those cold winter days when the weather has us less than enthusiastic to brave the outdoors, but it can also make a great companion on a walk or hike too! The pain-relieving qualities of CBD make it a natural partner to the soothing nature of tea. There are several ways to create gourmet versions of CBD or cannabis tea on the web, but for added convenience and ease, tinctures are your best friend. They offer an easy way to control dosing, and their mild (if at all present) flavor goes well with just about any tea you may have in the cabinet.

CBD to THC Ratio Considerations

A few tincture options from Fairwinds and Ceres

A few tincture options from Fairwinds and Ceres

As we’ve stated before, knowing the potency and ratio of CBD to THC that is best for you is key. Select a tincture that’s appropriate to the activity. If you’re at home and mellowing out on the couch and in need of serious relief, it may be beneficial to use a tincture with with a higher concentration of THC, while conversely if you’re out on a walk or out in nature, you may want to minimize the risk of intoxication with something like a 20:1 (20 parts CBD to 1 part THC). Everyone’s needs are different and unique. Safety is always the number one consideration. It’s also good to consider the onset time of effects. We always recommend to start low and go slow, and build up to a dose that’s most effective and comforting for you.

Tinctures | Onset time is typically 15-45 minutes with 4-5 hour duration. Oil based liquids placed under the tongue can begin absorbing into the bloodstream faster than other ingestible products. Note that effects may be delayed to 2 hours to be felt in some cases.

Dosing

Most CBD and cannabis tinctures have a dropper with a capacity to administer 1 dose, around 0.6ml of liquid. Meter your dose based upon desired effects and the ratio and strength of the product you’e using. Remember that if you consume the entire cup of tea you’re adding it to, it will have the same effect as it would if you’d placed the CBD liquid under your tongue as the tincture intends.

CBD Tea Recipe: Easy as 1-2-3

  1. Heat a kettle with purified water and wait for it to boil. Meanwhile prepare your tincture and select your favorite bagged or loose leaf tea. A high THC tincture and a high caffeine tea may be jitter-inducing and energizing, so pair your ratio and tea to tailor your optimal experience.

  2. Pour water over tea and steep for desired amount of time or around 3-4 minutes. Fun and tasty additions like sliced lemon or cinnamon can be added at this point too to let those flavors marry.

  3. Remove the steeped tea and discard. Stir in a dropperful of your preferred CBD or cannabis tincture and stir. Tinctures typically use avocado oil in their formulation and you may see that float to the top of your tea, that’s ok! Now it’s time to enjoy your tea, happy holidays!

Sun Cup Winners

Sun-Grown Cannabis Rated by Experts

A Judge’s Perspective | Matt Kovarsky

For the last 4 years I’ve worked at The Novel Tree & The Novel Tree Medical where I’ve been able to see the rise of legal recreational cannabis firsthand, and it’s given me so many opportunities to see the inner workings of the industry from a truly unique perspective.

One of the most exciting things has been getting to know the different growers, their growing methods, and their products. While I’ve learned how to grow hydroponically indoors and was able to produce some very high-quality cannabis (if I do say so myself), I’ve also learned to appreciate and have a love for sun grown cannabis. While you can create ideal conditions indoors, the cannabis plant produces cannabinoids and terpenes as a stress response, it is literally the plants immune system. There are many people that believe that without any kind of struggle or stress, indoor plants are sometimes missing the unique characteristics that you can find with a plant exposed to the elements, getting the full spectrum light of the sun.

Several months ago, I received an email from the Washington Sungrowers Industry Association notifying members of the forthcoming 2020 Sun Cup, a cannabis competition for all things sun grown. The email was informing growers how to submit their cannabis to be judged, but one of the last lines of the email was asking for people to submit for the opportunity to be a judge. After immediately clicking the link and seeing that I met all the criteria to be a judge, I submitted an application and began checking my emails for a response.

A few weeks later I received the most glorious of emails saying that I’d been selected as a judge for the 2020 Sun Cup. I was over the moon excited. There were instructions on where and how to pick-up products, as COVID was new at this time there was a series of social distancing and spy-like signaling to pick up the products to sample. I was not informed which category I would be judging for, so I went and picked up my bag, which was a lot smaller than I was expecting. It didn’t seem to be over flowing with ounces of beautiful sun grown flower like I had thought!

When I arrived back at home, I emptied the bag and to my amazement saw a bountiful assortment of THC & CBD vaporizer cartridges. I won’t say exactly how many, but it was enough to be excited about! There was also a letter informing me of how and where to document my experiences and submit my judging reviews. Once I had the plan for how I would do my sampling in place, I had to do the first most important thing you have to do with any cartridge, which is make sure it works on your vape battery. A faulty cartridge would definitely lose some points of course! I put each cartridge on my vape battery and took one or two puffs from each vaporizer, which all worked perfectly from the first draw, and the combination of all the THC and CBD vapes had me feeling pretty good. So far, I was really enjoying being a judge.

None of the vape cartridges were labeled, to keep each one anonymous and keep the judging purely objective. As a budtender I have spent the last 4 years telling people about the importance of cannabinoid and terpene profiles, and now I was about to spend a day only smoking things without the benefit of having the information I’ve come to greatly appreciate. I was going in blind with each new sample. Normally I would have different, very specific products for different times of the day or different situations. Sativas for the daytime on my days off, something a little more relaxing like an Indica for after work. It was all like a blind taste test.

A Different Product Each Day of Judging

The samples were all numbered, so I began my first day of judging with sample #1. I had everything ready so that it would be the first thing I smoked after work and would be the only thing I smoked till I went to bed. Taking the whole evening to see how I was affected, and what my overall thoughts were. I noted the color of the oil, its consistency, the taste and what sort of high it gave me among other qualities.

As the sampling progressed there were definitely things I that I really enjoyed, and unfortunately others that were not my favorite. When I found ones that I did not necessarily like as much I made sure to give those extra attention. What about the flavor or consistency or effects were not my favorite? If I was going to give something a less than perfect score, I felt it was very important to have specific reasons and feedback.

The funny thing is that about halfway through, as with anything I think there was a feeling of burden. All I wanted was to smoke a joint, but I had dedicated myself to this and I did not want to give any sample anything less than my full attention. I got over this quickly, but I just thought it was funny how even during the opportunity of a lifetime anything that we must do, can feel like an obligation.

I had set specific samples to the side, ones that I wanted to give a second chance to. Some I wanted to try again because they were so good that I wanted to be sure that they held up to a second test. Others I wanted to be sure that I had good reasons why I was giving them the score that I did. I found that one of the cartridges I initially didn’t think I liked that much had a lot of complexity and nuance in the flavor and effects, and after a second try I ended up scoring it higher than I initially had.

After I submitted my final review, I rolled a giant joint and was happy to smoke flower and anything other than a cartridge for a few days. Do not get me wrong, I love cartridges, and had an absolute blast judging, but there is just something I love about a good joint. By this time Corona was in full effect so I was not sure how or when I would hear who the winners were, but I had done my part for the 2020 sun cup.

I spent a total of two and a half weeks with all the samples that were provided to me.

An Email went out that the winners would be announced in a Zoom call award ceremony that was held on Sunday June 21st. It was so fun and exciting to watch and see the winners for different categories, and very cool to see that so many of the winners were companies that we carry at The Novel Tree and The Novel Tree Medical, and that we carried a lot of the specific winning products. We work very hard to have the best products on our shelves, and this was very reaffirming that we are on the right track in terms of who we partner with and the specific products we carry.

It was an amazing opportunity and experience to get to be a judge for the 2020 Sun Cup. I want to thank the Washington Sungrowers Industry Association for the opportunity and all their hard work putting on this event, especially with all the adjustments and precautions necessary during these uncertain times.

Puffin Farms is Clean Green-Certified

The care that went into every stage of this product is evident in the vapor. Puffin Farms EVFO (Extra Virgin Flower Oil) uses a low temperature during extraction to preserve as much of the essence of the plant as possible. Naturally high in terpenes the EVFO cartridges taste unlike any other cartridge on the market. The Hindu Kush is specifically very high in limonene which gives the oil an incredible bright citrus taste, and a naturally uplifting euphoric high. There’s a reason why this one came in first place, come check it out for yourself.

Runner Up, Best Infused Preroll: Puffin Farms Trifecta Big Bubble Dutch

Ever since the first batch of Trifecta pre-rolls came to The Novel Tree Medical they’ve been a customer and consultant favorite. The combination of flower with bubble hash and rosin gives the perfect combination of flavor, potency, and a nice slow burn that makes these perfect for sharing. A perfect combination of energizing and intoxicating, this is the perfect cannabis for socializing, playing video games, or working in the garden.

Runner Up, Best CBD Flower: Lazy Bee Gardens Sour Tsunami

This very high CBD very low THC offering from Lazy Bee Gardens is the perfect option for a lot of situations. With over 13% CBD and less than 1% THC, its bright uplifting terpene profile means you could smoke this first thing in the morning instead of a cup of coffee for that perfect start to your morning. The powerful anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD are in full effect here as many will use this after work to help relax their body and mind at the end of the day. One of my favorite things to do with a high CBD like this is to mix it with one of my high THC strains. Mix this with another bright sativa for a clear headed energetic effect, or mix with a sedating indica for increased pain relief, relaxation, and a better night sleep.

Outstanding Cannabis Advocate: Micah Sherman of Raven Grass

The cannabis industry is better because of his efforts and we greatly appreciate his work both in and out of the garden.
